Gynecologic infections can be divided into the lower tract, which causes vaginal discharge and itching, and the upper tract, which includes infections of the cervix, uterus, tubes, and ovaries, and the formation of scar tissue, which can lower fertility. Cervical infections with the human papillomavirus (HPV) may go away on their own after a few years or may persist and cause cellular abnormalities, which are precursors to cervical cancer.

It is recommended that women who have more than one sexual partner be screened regularly for sexually transmitted infections.

Some women with lower genital tract infections, like yeast and BV, are bothered by frequent recurrences.  There are long-term solutions to attempt to break the cycle.

Bacterial infections, parasites, and yeast infections are always easier to treat than viruses such as herpes and HPV. Finally, mycoplasmas are the most difficult to treat.
