Any genital tract bleeding that occurs outside of the menstrual cycle is abnormal. Some progestin only birth control methods cause irregular bleeding or lack of bleeding which are expected side effects. Bleeding during pregnancy can be a sign of a miscarriage, an ectopic pregnancy, or preterm labor.

Women who do not ovulate, have endometriosis, fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory disease may have abnormal bleeding.

The bleeding can be very heavy and should be evaluated and treated as soon as possible. Heavy vaginal bleeding can also be a sign that blood clotting is not normal.

Any bleeding after menopause may be a sign of uterine cancer.

Ultrasound is the first step to find out why there is abnormal bleeding. At Urgent Care for Women the ultrasound is done by an experienced doctor, not an ultrasound tech. The results of the scan are discussed before you leave the office. Why wait to find out. Call us today.
